Extract from daffodils shows promising new cancer treatment

Scientists are researching for newer and more natural ways of treating cancer.  Daffodil extracts happen to have some good that can treat cancer.

Recently in a research published in a journal named Structure, it has been said that a natural extract sourced from daffodils is capable of killing cancer. As far as cancer treatment goes this is a major development indeed. It basically creates a molecular mechanism that could lead to the death of cancer cells in one’s body. This research also proves the fact that even if we are unable to notice it by just looking at the flower daffodil it does have the power to kill cancerous cells. It was Denis Lafontaine who led this groundbreaking new research. He is a member of the Faculty of Sciences, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

The university is located in Belgium. For this study, Lafontaine and team tested the anti-cancer capabilities of hemanthamine, a natural extract that can be sourced from daffodils. Hemanthamine, also known as HAE, happens to be a natural alkaloid. This is a chemical that occurs naturally in plants and this is supposed to have a really commendable effect on human physiology. A number of in vitro studies have shown that HAE possesses the quality to fight cancer. They can also overcome cell death, which is basically the resistance offered by cells against apoptosis. Incidentally, some of these in vitro tests were done before the study done by Lafontaine’s team.

As far as the new cancer treatment is concerned this is expected to play a major role indeed. The researchers, in this case, were from the RNA Molecular Biology Laboratory, which is a part of the Faculty of Sciences as well, and the ULB-Cancer Research Center. They have revealed that HAE is capable of activating a pathway for antitumoral surveillance. The results have highlighted the mechanism through which plants that belong to the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids family are able to fight cancer. The Amaryllidaceae plants have compounds that are pharmacologically active ones and this is the reason why they are among the top 20 names when it comes to medicinal plant families.

Making sure that the cancer cells do not get proteins

The researchers have explained in this study that cancer cells require protein synthesis so that they are able to grow and spread to various parts of the body. Ribosomes, which are basically cell organelles, are really crucial as far as synthesizing proteins is concerned. For that matter, ribosomes are also referred to as micro-machines that come in extremely handy for making proteins in your body. This means that in a way ribosomes are the Achilles’ heel as far as cancer cells are concerned. This can play an important role in cancer diagnosis as well.

Especially, malignant cells are known to be really sensitive when it comes to therapies that are capable of stopping ribosomes from working the way that they are supposed to. Lafontaine and his co-researchers have shown in their research that HAE stops the production of protein. It does this by working on these ribosomes. This extract is capable of blocking the very production of these ribosomes. They do this in the nucleolus area that can also be termed as a ribosome factory of sorts.
