Though it might sound a bit odd, gestational diabetes is a phenomenon wherein women develop this disease during pregnancy. However, it is not impossible to deliver a healthy baby even after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Consult the doctor and do simple things to manage the blood glucose level and you will have a healthy baby. After your childbirth, diabetes may vanish but it might leave to susceptible to Type 2 Diabetes.
Gestational diabetes is caused during pregnancy. During this period, the placenta can make hormones leading to a buildup of sugar in the blood. Usually, the pancreas can secrete adequate insulin to manage the increased level of blood sugar. However, if it fails to do this anyhow, gestational diabetes is caused.
Not every woman is afflicted by gestational diabetes. A pregnant woman will get gestational diabetes if:
She is overweight prior to and during the pregnancy
She is Native American, Hispanic, Asian or Afro-American
Blood sugar level is generally higher than normal but not leading towards being diabetic
Diabetes is a hereditary issue
She has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes before also.
Gestational diabetes is generally diagnosed by the doctor between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy; this will happen if you are not at high risk. The test involves consuming a sugary drink to raise the level of blood sugar inside the body. After an hour, a blood test will be conducted to find out how well the body managed that excess sugar. If the level indicates 130 milligrams per deciliter, an additional test will be performed which will be done during fasting for 3 hours. If the results are normal and well within limits, you need not worry. However, if the level is marginally high, you might have to take another test, later on, to ensure you are not suffering from gestational diabetes.
Thankfully, gestational diabetes can be treated and cured also. You simply need to follow what your doctor suggests if you want to deliver a healthy baby. You must:
Check the blood sugar level 4 or more times per day
Perform urine tests for ketones to know whether your diabetes is under control or not.
Eating a healthy diet which coincides with the doctor’s advice.
The doctor you are consulting will track how much weight you have gained to advice you on your insulin intake. The doctor can advice other medication as well during gestational diabetes to keep the blood sugar level under control.
Gestational diabetes is not a lethal disease; rather it can be treated and cured and it occurs during the pregnancy period. Checking with the doctor regularly is necessary to be able to deliver a healthy baby. The good news is that you will not have to suffer from it throughout your life. As soon as you deliver, you can get rid of diabetes too.
